which he graduated Magma cum Laude in 1976.
He earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins
University where he pursued his interest in
ophthalmology by researching corneal transplant
rejections. After graduating in 1980 he completed
a residency in Ophthalmology at the Manhattan
Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital in New York,
followed by specialty training in corneal
and anterior segment surgery with Dr. Richard
Troutman. He served a portion of his fellowship
in Colombia, South America where he studied
with Dr. Jose Barraquer learning advanced
refractive surgical techniques. Foremost among
these were the keratomileusis techniques,
which are the precursors to modern day LASIK.
Dr. Haight
established a private practice specializing
in corneal and refractive surgery. He is
a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology
and a fellow of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. Dr. Haight holds several
academic appointments including:
· Surgeon Director
at Manhattan Eye and Ear
· Director of Refractive Surgery
at Manhattan Eye and Ear
· Clinical Asst. Professor at Weill
Medical College of Cornell University
· Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Columbia
University on
the Medical Advisory Board of the New York
Eye Bank for Sight Restoration holding the
position of Secretary of the Board. He has
appeared in New York Magazine's best doctors
list and has been featured on the CBS and
NBC morning television programs, CNN, Fox
News, and The Food Network. Channels 4,
7 and New York One, have interviewed him
locally. As a member of the American Academy
of Ophthalmology Skills Transfer Committee,
he has overseen the development of all the
refractive surgery laboratory courses offered
at its annual meeting. He is the recipient
of the American Academy's Honor Award in
recognition of his contribution academic
programs. for
the Excimer Laser Study at the Manhattan
Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. In that
capacity, he performed pioneering research
that helped lead to FDA approval of the
excimer. . Dr. Haight was the first in downstate
New York to perform excimer laser vision
correction. . He performed hundreds of laser
procedures as part of the Food and Drug
Administrations Clinical Trials. Each treatment
was exhaustively analyzed using the latest
computer technology. Information, from those
patients became an important part of the
database, which allowed the FDA to approve
laser vision correction. Since 1991, Dr.
Haight has treated the full range of conditions
from simple nearsightedness to severe corneal
disease. has
a greater depth of experience or length
of follow-up of such cases. Dr. Haight has
published in peer-reviewed journals, authored
textbook chapters, made approximately 200
presentations at major meetings and contributed
to the development of the computer software
that controls the laser. He is a certified
trainer for the VISX excimer laser system
and since FDA approval in 1996 has personally
instructed several hundred ophthalmologists
in the use of the laser. in
the development of the excimer laser and
related technologies.  |
